Living in a society long dominated by soca and reggae music made the notion of success in the genre of hip-hop seem an almost laughable idea to anyone living in Trinidad and Tobago. Had anyone been told that the Caribbean island of Trinidad and Tobago would produce two of the finest mc’s, they would have been skeptical and understandably so. Notwithstanding, Richard Colley and Laird Agard began a journey along the road less traveled some five years ago when they attended the same school. Both avid fans of hip-hop music, they quickly built up a rapport. Their passion and penchant for lyricism eventually led them to start rapping as a dynamic duo and they quickly gained a reputation among peers, friends, and the local underground as singular rhyme spitters.
Since the pair did not have the finances to record at a major studio, they hustled and did whatever was needed, recording their first project on a personal computer with a microphone. This was the infamous “Pen Paper and a Beer”, a mixtape, the sole purpose of which was to make people aware that true hip-hop was a force to be reckoned with. This mixtape featured a remix to Fat Joe’s smash hit “Lean Back” called “Move Back”. The track went on to gain massive rotation in the underground and eventually found its way onto radio. The pair stayed focused and eventually released two more mixtapes to an eager public, distributing the mixtapes straight out of the trunks of cars.
In 2005 the emergence of local music station ‘Synergy’ meant a new platform for the progression of the group and for the art form as a whole. The group has since released three videos, all gaining serious rotation on the top ten countdown show. The latest of the three entitled “D Way U Wine” was the immensely popular collaboration with soca sensation Hashim. This video is still in heavy rotation on the countdown show and has been for the last 4 months. With a view of breaking into the international market, this video was recently submitted to MTV Tempo Caribbean and has been approved for airing this month. Furthermore, the group has been featured in the December issue of the Caribbean magazine 411 which also featured articles with Buju Banton and other major Caribbean artistes. The group’s immediate goals are to get signed to a major label and show that hip-hop is universal regardless of where you are from. They are currently grinding on the mixtape circuit with two new mixtapes set for release in the coming months as well as trying to finish their album “Day In The Life”.
The group lives by its motto “Can’t deny the hotness” which, in their opinion, will be A&R’s and labels’ reaction when they hear the dynamic duo’s work.
Tango a.k.a. Tommy Gunz
Tango has been know to wreak havoc on tracks with his pointed delivery, cunning lyrics and ridiculous wordplay. No bricks and keys here this native repping the deep south showcases on “What they waiting for” Tango spits. It’s the dude with the sick lyricism/I get up in your cerebellum/I’m a lion with venom in em / I’m a beast on beats plus lethal/That’s probably the reason I get love from animal rights people a classic example of the lyricist at work.
Cash a.k.a. Cashious Clay
Cash has been known for his unique flow, aggressive delivery and his never ending supply of punch lines that made artiste such as Ludacris and Lloyd Banks household names. Cash is sure to get a reaction out of listeners with lines such as You’ll some little bitches like chicks in hooters/Always missing the point like bad free throw shooters/You’ll just some losers/This nigga bound to blow/Niggas shit aint dropping on an overdose of pepto bismo.
Tango and Cash
Together these mc’s have formed a lethal combination. Versatile and intelligent but still streetwise they spit for the clubs, the ladies and the streets all blending it together in a unique way with a sense of Caribbean flavor. In a time where people jack each other’s styles to get into the game, A&R’s need to look no further than these mc’s from Trinidad with their own charisma and sense of style destined to change the hip hop game. Their music says it all!
